New York Yankee’s hopefully off to a very long season

Published by wv918 under baseball, basketball Edit This

Checking the sports news today, I see that the New York Yankees is off to what I hope is a very long season. They opened up at Baltimore yesterday playing the Orioles and went down in defeat 10-5. CC Sabathia, the New York Yankees $161 million dollar man couldn’t get out of the fifth inning. He didn’t record a strikeout in a game for the first time since July 2005 against the Oakland A’s.

Then the icing on the cake for me is Mark Teixeira going 0-4 at the plate. He left the Atlanta Braves after last season and signed a $180 million dollar contract with the Yankees.

In other sports news the North Carolina Tarheels beat the Michigan State Spartans 82-79 and claimed their fifth national championship and second under coach Gary Williams. Ty Lawson led the Tarheels with 21 points and 8 steals followed by Wayne Ellington’s 19 points and Tyler Hansbrough who had 18 points and 7 rebounds.

Michigan State was led by Goran Sutton with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Kalin Lucas with 14 points. Durrell Summers also had 13 points.

Syracuse takes out WV in Big East tournament

Published by wv918 under basketball Edit This

I thought the West Virginia Mountaineers was going to catch the Syracuse Orangemen tired last night but obviously I was mistaken. They didn’t look the least bit tired in beating West Virginia 74-69 in overtime. I did see a few short jump shots but other than that they looked good.

The whole game was relatively close with neither team getting more than a 10 point lead on the other. At the beginning of overtime Syracuse jumped out to a six point lead and that was the end for West Virginia. They never got closer than two points and then had to start fouling and Syracuse made almost all their free throws to seal the win.

Eric Devendorf led the Orangemen with 23 points followed by Jonny Flynn with 15. The entire Syracuse team including players off the bench who played scored at least 6 points so everybody contributed in the win.

The Mountaineers were led by Devin Ebanks who for the second straight night topped his personal best with 22 points. DeSean Butler added 21 and Darryl Bryant 10 points. Alex Ruoff had a off night scoring only nine points after getting 18 in the win against Pitt the previous night.

So as a Mountaineer fan I suppose I can put a spin on the loss and say we will have some time to rest before March Madness starts next week. But I would sure liked for us to be playing Louisville tonight for the Big East championship.

The Big East championship game will be between the Louisville Cardinals and Syracuse at 9 pm tonight on ESPN.

WV Mounties upset Pitt in Big East tournament

Published by wv918 under basketball Edit This

I don’t know which was the bigger shock, my West Virginia Mountaineers finally beating the Pitt Panthers on the third try or the Syracuse Orangemen upsetting the Uconn Huskies in 6 over times.

I sure know which one makes me happier though, the Mountaineers 74-60 upset win over the Panthers. To win against them in anything is sweet if your a West Virginia fan.

The Pitt Panthers like to think of themselves as the Detroit Pistons back in the day when they use to play tough and rough their opponents up. Not last night though and Jermaine Dixon, one of the Panthers starting guards said it best when he was quoted after the game, “They were tougher than we were.”

With Pitt’s DeJuan Blair, the co Big East player of the year sitting on the bench much of the game with foul trouble, West Virginia led at the half by the score of 36-34. when they come out for the 2nd half Coach Huggins put on his 1-3-1 zone defense and Pitt couldn’t shoot over it. They went without a 3 pointer for the first time all season going 0-8 from the 3 point line. Pitt was also out rebounded for the first time since Jan 25 when West Virginia did it in one of their losses to them.

West Virginia was led by Devin Ebanks with 20 points and 7 rebounds and also played the entire game, never coming out.. ESPN announcers Jay Bilas and Bill Rafferty continuously praised Ebanks good play and said he’s going to be a great player in the years to come. Alex Ruoff added 18 points and DaSean Butler put in 16 points.

Pitt was led in scoring by forward Sam Young with 15 points and Dejuan Blair added 14 even with all his foul trouble. The experts are saying this loss may jeopardize Pitt’s chances at getting a number 1 seed in the tournament but it’s really to early to tell.

Next up for my Mountaineers is the Syracuse Orangemen who beat the 3rd ranked Uconn Huskies 127-117 in 6 overtimes last night. Their game ended at about 1:30 this morning so I hope they get no sleep so we can kick their butts real good tonight. The game will be on ESPN at 9 pm.

Big East tournament games

Published by wv918 under basketball Edit This

I don’t usually get interested in college basketball until it comes time for March Madness. Its getting close, all the leagues are having their tournaments and the champs of those leagues get a automatic bid to the tournament that will eventually crown the NCAA basketball champion.

The Big East tournament is being played right now in Madison Square Garden and the second round just concluded last night. I follow the Big East league because that where my West Virginia Mountaineers play.

They played the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last night on ESPN and looked really good. They built a big first half lead of 20 points and then held on when Notre Dame fought back to win 74-62. The Mountaineers led 36-18 at halftime due to a smothering defense that kept the Irish from getting any shots close to the basket.

West Virginia was led by Alex Ruoff with 25 points which was a big turn around from his horrible night against Louisville several nights earlier when he went scoreless. Da’Sean Butler also had 20 points and Devin Eubanks grabbed 17 rebounds and had 7 points.

Notre Dame was led by Luke Harangody who had only 4 points in the first half but finished strong with 23 in the second half for 27 total. Kyle McAlarney also added 17 points..

West Virginia now has a record of 22-10 and next up for them is the Pitt Panthers who are ranked number 2 in the country. Pitt has beaten us twice already this season but both games were close until the end so we can hang with them. We just need the ball to bounce the right way a few times tonight. The game will be on ESPN at 7:00pm tonight.
