So the big money spending New York Yankees won the World Series the other night. After throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett they finally got back to the World Series and won it. Checking the list of World Series winners I see it had been 8 years since they had won it all. Is all those millions of dollars George Steinbrenner shells out really worth winning a World Series once every eight years.

They did win 3 World Series in a row from 1998- 2000 and have won a total of 7 since George Steinbrenner and a group of investors bought the New York Yankees for 10 million dollars back in 1973, that’s 7 World Series wins in 30 years. In the 96 years since they’ve been named the New York Yankees they have won a total of 27 World Series titles. I don’t really know when team owners started shelling out big bucks for free agents but I’m sure the majority of the Yankees titles and other teams as well was won without the big payrolls that you see today.

You’ve probably guessed that I’m not a big New York Yankees fan and I’m not. I just think spending hundreds of millions of dollars for top free agents is not good for baseball. It’s not just the Yankees, several teams spend big bucks on players and the majority of the other teams are left fielding good players but have no chance in getting the great ones they would need to make their team better.

Luckily spending big bucks usually doesn’t lead to winning the World Series. The Yankees are a perfect example of that, in 30 years under The Boss’s ownership they’ve won 7 titles. So George is batting .233, when you look at it that way George is very mediocre

It was announced yesterday that Richard Petty Motorsports will merge with Yates Racing and will switch brands from Dodge to Ford. They will field 4 cars with the 98 driven by Paul Menard coming over to Petty while doing away with the 44 which is driven by A.J. Allmendinger currently. Allmendinger will hop in the 43 car which is currently being driven by Reed Sorenson so that leaves Reed without a ride for next year.

Also their is a rumor that Yates will bring back the number 28 car and Elliott Sadler will drive it. If that happens then they will scrap the number 19 Sadler currently drives. I found a quote by Kasey Kahne who drives the 9 Budweiser car is is the only driver worth a damn on the whole team. He seems like he is going to be happy with the switch but just have to wait and see. The change wont go in to effect until next year with the Daytona 500.

“You know what I like — we have really good cars, but I feel like we need to make some gains engine-wise,” Kahne said. “And Roush-Yates engines are really good, but they can make some gains car-wise. Between all of us working together, we can make some big gains for next year.” Kasey Kahne

Kasey Kahne’s win in the Nascar Sprint Cup Series at Atlanta last Sunday night was huge in that it gave him a 96 point lead over 12th place Matt Kenseth and almost assured Kahne of a spot in the chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

His win also gave him 10 big extra bonus points which right now would put him in second place with Matt Kenseth when the points reset after Richmond. Mark Martin has four wins so far put is in danger of falling out of the top 12 with only one race left till the chase begins. Kyle Busch also has 4 wins and if he and Martin make it in then Kahne would be put back in third when points reset.

Denny Hamlin ended a 50 race winless streak yesterday in winning the Nascar Sprint Cup race at Pocono. The race was postponed Sunday due to the rain. Hamlin last win was at Martinsville in March of 2008 and this was his third win at the Pocono track. He was also racing with a heavy heart as his 91 year old grandmother had just passed away only day earlier in Tampa.

Juan Pablo Montoya finished second for his first top 5 of the year and Clint Bowyer had his best finish of the season coming in third. Sam Hornish was fourth which was the highest he has ever finished in a Nascar race. Kasey Kahne finished fifth for another good showing.

I thought for a while that Kasey was going to win because Hamlin was stuck back around in 10th place with not that many laps left. But still a fifth place finish is great for Kasey and he moved up another spot in the standings and now sits in 7th place. Kahne is only 109 points out of fourth place but what would even be better is if he won another race or two for the bonus points since the points reset to 5000 for the 12 Sprint Cup chasers when that starts. Every race won is good for 10 extra bonus points added to your 5000.
